Some are extraterrestrial, like the Kanamits from 'To Serve Man,' who appear benevolent but harbor a sinister appetite. Others are supernatural, such as the ghostly hitchhiker who follows a terrified woman on a lonely road, or the gremlin on the wing of a transatlantic flight. Many are psychological manifestations, like the man who finds himself trapped in a world where everyone wears the same face, or the woman who discovers her own reflection has a mind of its own. This diversity underscores the show's core belief that the greatest monsters are often those we create in our own minds.

The night was thick with fog, and the only sound was the hum of a distant streetlamp. A man named Arthur walked home alone, his footsteps echoing on the wet pavement. He heard a soft shuffle behind him, but when he turned, there was nothing. He walked faster, the shuffle growing louder, closer. He broke into a run, his breath ragged, until he reached his front door. As he fumbled with the key, a cold hand touched his shoulder. He spun around, but the street was empty. He looked down and saw his own shadow, but it was moving—slowly, deliberately—reaching out for him. In the Twilight Zone, the monsters are never quite where you expect them.
